Sankranthiki Vasthunnam Movie Review: High Potential with a single mom with three children who starts working with the police, exploiting her incredible genius. The first season of the Disney+ show consisting of thirteen episodes, each of which is released weekly, has been available for viewing since January 23, 2025.
The TV series, developed by Drew Goddard, is the American remake of the Franco-Belgian TV series HPI that in our country we know as Morgane – Detective Geniale, broadcast on Rai 1. The showrunner is Todd Harthan and Sankranthiki Vasthunnam is the last series made by ABC Signature before it was incorporated into 20th Television, creating a single studio for the serial production of the Disney group.
Sankranthiki Vasthunnam – A light procedural with an explosive and improvised detective mom
Sankranthiki Vasthunnam is a sincere and light procedural, which has an explosive detective mom as its protagonist: a well-written character, a protagonist who acts even better. Kaitlin Olsen is cut out for this role that lets her show off all her skills, and above all how she is able to lead a series after Hacks and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
She plays Morgan, a single mother of three who cleans in Los Angeles, who one day at the police department starts to sort out some photos and manages to solve a case, rearranging some clues. Her IQ is 160 and the head of the major crimes division decides to use the protagonist’s intellect to solve other cases.
In exchange, the woman asks the police for help in understanding what happened to Roman, the father of her eldest daughter Ava, who disappeared when she was just born. The TV series stands up thanks to Olsen's interpretation also because the minor storylines relating to the various detectives are barely hinted at.
Everything is overshadowed by the centrality of the main character. A characteristic that generates visual contrast (starting from the clothes and her flashy look, the dialectic and the marked makeup) even before the narrative with the rest of the team with which she will have to learn to collaborate. Her colors deliberately clash with the grayness of the department and her colleagues.
A show that works for its subject and the scenography, for the world that supports and enriches the narration
Sankrsnthiki Vasthunnam is a TV series that works for its subject and the scenography, for the world that supports and enriches the narration. It is not a particularly strong or impactful product, innovative or that can become popular on social media. In any case, there is a woman who has an extraordinary intelligence, but who is not surprising only for this.
She has a photographic memory, she remembers many details, she can see the details where others don't see any signs. A mother who is a bit of a born detective and has an uncommon sensitivity. It is not the first time that we see a genius solving crimes (and it is no coincidence that this series is a remake, we could add), but many could find it pleasant, fun and light if all this is done by a woman like Morgan in the Kaitlin Olsen version! A sui generis woman who dresses in an eccentric and flamboyant way, who always says the right thing at the right time.
Sankranthiki Vasthunnam: evaluation and conclusion
Sankranthiki Vasthunnam is a remake with a protagonist who does great and holds everything on her shoulders (the choice of Daniel Sunjata in the role of Karadec, the woman's initial partner, seems a little less successful to us) but overall the cast works. We appreciated the serial conflict that emerges, the settings, the situations and the scenarios of opposing forces that maintain the freedom to describe the main character and those around her.
Even if they don’t hit the mark entirely. The crime series entertains above all thanks to the subject, as mentioned, and for the care of all those details that reveal to us in small quantities – but without interruption – “the new world” of a professional of anti-political correctness.
